Bedrest unfolds like a fever dream—its intimacy tinged with unease. One figure lies prone, eyes closed in vulnerability, while another hovers protectively above, offering a vial of liquid to their lips. The scene evokes care, but a note of danger lingers: is the tincture a cure or a poison? With its dramatic candlelit glow and references to medieval interiors, the painting blurs the line between domestic ritual and gothic fable. Mitchell’s surfaces, rich with stippled texture and soft gradation, enhance this sense of suspended meaning. As with much of her work, Bedrest invites multiple readings—where tenderness, manipulation, and power all exist in close proximity.
