For this project, which was funded by an FONCA Art Residency grant in Mexico, I travelled to the same mountains and snow-capped peaks that Alexander von Humboldt explored in various regions of Central and South America in the early nineteenth century. Through a photographic series, I portray these landscapes in their current state and compare them with Humboldt's accounts and descriptions of these places, reflecting on the relationship between words, images and experiences. This project originates from my research into Humboldt's journey in the context of the geodetic expeditions undertaken by various European nations during the colonial era to the recently discovered Americas.
This project has been exhibited at the Humboldt Forum in Berlin (September 2019) and at the Museum of Art of the National University of Colombia (May 2019).
