Main Projects is pleased to present Two in One, a solo exhibition by San Francisco–based artist Devra Fox (b. 1989). Through graphite drawings that fuse human and botanical forms, Fox explores the transformations of the body, the porous boundaries between beings, and the cyclical processes of growth, reproduction, and change.

The exhibition centers on Fox’s new drawing Two in One (2025), which lends the show its title. The work reflects on the experience of matrescence—the profound physical and psychological shifts of becoming a mother. Fox describes pregnancy as a doubling: “Pre-motherhood I existed as one, became two in pregnancy, and endured the slow process of separation post birth, dwindling back to single yet with a physical and emotional tether to another outside of myself."

Through a lexicon of anthropomorphic plants, Fox visualizes the interdependence of human and natural systems. Branches echo veins, stems entwine like connective tissue, and blossoms emerge as if pulsing with interior life. Works such as Ripen and Ripe recall the contours of a womb, while All Fours intimates a form bent low, at once grounded and straining toward transformation. In the Attached series, plantlike forms cradle stones—an image of holding, protection, and permanence. Fox turns to stones for their symbolic weight, recalling their role in Jewish ritual as markers of memory and the endurance of the soul. Within these drawings, the stones serve both as anchors and as offerings, extending her exploration of growth and transformation into the realms of care, remembrance, and continuity.

Fox’s meticulous graphite practice is meditative and intimate, imbuing each drawing with a visceral presence. Across these works, she investigates embodiment as both containment and expansion, illustrating how life unfolds in interconnected stages of creation, separation, and renewal.

Devra Fox (b. 1989) received her MFA from Columbia University (2016) and her BA from Bard College (2012). She has exhibited internationally, with recent solo presentations at Hashimoto Contemporary (San Francisco), Hesse Flatow (New York), and Nicodim Upstairs (Los Angeles). Her work has been featured in Juxtapoz, XIBT Magazine, Art Maze Mag, and FUKT Magazine.

Two in One marks Fox’s first solo exhibition with Main Projects.
