Debuting in Main Projects’ inaugural exhibition, "Lovers"Apricity (Walnut) and Apricity (Maple) mark the first official collaboration between husband-and-wife duo Leigh Suggs and Daniel Rickey, two Richmond-based artists with distinct but complementary practices. These stunning wood wall reliefs are a testament to their shared artistic vision, mutual respect, and a decade-long partnership—both in life and art.
The word Apricity means “the warmth of the sun in winter,” a beautiful and evocative term that captures the spirit of these works. For Leigh and Daniel, the word symbolizes moments of respite, stillness, and the profound comfort they bring to one another as partners. These sentiments are embodied in their choice of walnut and maple, local Virginia hardwoods that ground the editions in place, heritage, and natural beauty.
Each piece draws from Leigh’s meticulous and meditative process, known for transforming patterns, grids, and cut paper into vibrant, sculptural works that play with light and shadow. In Apricity, Leigh’s characteristic weaving and layering of forms are reimagined in wood, with Daniel’s craftsmanship and mastery of woodworking bringing her designs to life. The result is a seamless blend of tactile precision and conceptual depth—works that transcend materiality to evoke both intimacy and universality.
Daniel, a woodworker and furniture maker since 2012, is known for creating designs that invite touch and are built to last. With Leigh’s intricate hand-cut patterns and Daniel’s commitment to clean lines and durability, these editions are a synthesis of their creative practices and a metaphor for their marriage: warmth, growth, and a shared vision for life and art.
Leigh and Daniel share that watching sunrises and sunsets together has been a cherished ritual in their lives, offering moments of simplicity and connection amidst the chaos of daily life. These editions capture that feeling of serenity and shared experience.
Both editions will debut at Main Projects’ Lovers exhibition, a fitting context for these works that celebrate love, connection, and shared creativity.
