Thomas Barger’s chairs blur the line between furniture and sculpture, transforming everyday materials into emotionally charged, visually playful forms. Made from recycled paper pulp and resin, their bulbous shapes and muted hues recall domestic comfort while subverting it. Drawing from his rural Midwestern upbringing and queer identity, Barger reimagines familiar household objects—like daybeds, sugar dishes, or decorative chairs—as sites of both fantasy and tension. Each work carries a personal narrative, layered with humor, nostalgia, and critique. Balancing function, beauty, and storytelling, these chairs are not just meant to be used—they’re meant to be felt.
