Sandy Williams IV
Sandy Williams IV is an artist and educator whose conceptual practice explores communal memory and the dynamics of public space. Their work employs time as a material to create ephemeral, participatory memorials that challenge colonial narratives of permanence and uniformity while visualizing frameworks of emancipation and shared agency. Rooted in research and site-specificity, Williams’ interdisciplinary approach encompasses public art, performance, civic engagement, and collaboration, often expanding beyond galleries into everyday spaces.
Williams holds a BA from the University of Virginia and an MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University. They are an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Richmond and have received accolades including the 2024 Joan Mitchell Fellowship and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship. Their work has been exhibited at institutions such as 1708 Gallery, the Institute of Contemporary Art at VCU, and Socrates Sculpture Park, and featured in The New York Times and Hyperallergic. Residencies include McDowell, MASS MoCA, and SOMA (CDMX).
