Leigh Suggs’ practice is deeply rooted in the interplay between concealment and revelation, structure and fluidity. Her intricate works, which exist at the intersection of painting, sculpture, and craft, challenge the rigidity of form through meticulous hand-cut patterns that shift and transform with light and movement. By manipulating grids and patterns into dynamic, almost woven structures, Suggs engages with both the precision of modernist abstraction and the intimate, process-driven labor often associated with craft traditions. Her works pulsate with tension—between positive and negative space, between the handmade and the seemingly mechanical—inviting viewers to look beyond surface appearances and engage with the deeper human presence within the work. Through a methodical yet intuitive process of layering, tracing, painting, cutting, and assembling, she creates surfaces that shimmer with color, reflection, and shadow, offering meditations on focus, perception, and the evolving nature of form itself.
