Devra Fox (b. 1989)
Devra Fox’s graphite drawings and works on paper explore containment, memory, and the physical manifestation of emotion. With a meticulous and meditative approach, she animates the interplay between internal states and external environments, considering how unpredictability, attachment, and sentiment become inscribed onto objects and forms. Her monochromatic palette transforms natural and bodily imagery into intimate, uncanny representations that question how we experience vulnerability and resilience.
Fox received her BA in Studio Art from Bard College in 2012 and her MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University in 2016. Recent solo exhibitions include In Orbit at Hashimoto Contemporary, San Francisco (2024), WISH, BONE at Nicodim Upstairs, Los Angeles (2023), and Limbs at Hesse Flatow, New York (2023). Her work has also been featured in group exhibitions at Nicodim LA (Los Angeles), Bim Bam Gallery (Paris), Hashimoto Contemporary (San Francisco), Dinner Gallery (New York), and internationally in Berlin and Shanghai.
Fox has participated in residencies at Kala Art Institute (Berkeley), Pocoapoco (Oaxaca), Women’s Studio Workshop (Rosendale, NY), Vermont Studio Center, and Cow House Studios (Ireland), among others. She is a recipient of the Hemera Foundation’s Tending Space Fellowship for Artists, the Morty Frank Travel Fellowship, and the Christina R. Tarsell Award for Studio Arts. Her work has been featured in FUKT Magazine, XIBT Magazine, Two Coats of Paint, and Art Maze Mag.
Fox currently lives and works in San Francisco, CA.
