Tanya Merrill (b. 1987, New York, NY)
Tanya Merrill paints layered, folkloric scenes populated by human and animal figures traversing landscapes of myth, humor, and ecological tension. Her images unfold like fables, weaving together gestures of history, gender, and the natural world. Recurring symbols and a mutable cast of characters build a personal mythology that refracts contemporary anxieties through allegory.
Merrill received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College, and later earned her MFA from Columbia University.
Her solo exhibitions include Woman Laughing Alone in the Woods at Night (Half Gallery, New York, 2020) and Watching Women Give Birth On The Internet And Other Ways Of Looking (303 Gallery, New York); Tanya Merrill (The Pond Society, Shanghai, 2021). She has participated in group shows at Gagosian, Blum & Poe, Almine Rech, Clearing, and more.
